Learning Media

In general, media refer to various means of communication. For example, television, radio, and newspaper are different types of media. According to Advance Learners’ Dictionary, media is the means of communicating with large numbers of people.
Media play an important role in a teaching and learning process. Media are used to fasilitate the teacher and students to reach the goals of study. Media help the students to motivate them in the teaching and learning process.
There are a lot of definitions of media that have been given by the experts. Wilkison states that “Media are every tool and material that can be used in transferring information in a teaching and learning process.” From that definition, we can conclude that media are tools and materials that are used by teachers in teaching and learning process to support in delivering the material to the students, so they can understand what the teacher has explain to them.
To select the appropriate media, the teacher must take note of the characteristics of the students which directly relate to the learning process such as verbal abilities, visual and audio perception skill, experience, intelligence, motivation, personality and social skills. Because of the important role of media, teacher must be able to choose appropriate media and use a good method in teaching and learning process in order to get satisfactory results.
Media will be very useful if they are used carefully and creatively by the teachers, and then, they are used effectively to support the presentation of the lesson during the teaching and learning process.
Media that you can use in teaching and learning process such as video, picture, song, nursery rhyme, power point presentation, movie, poem, game, etc.
